How does the viewer interact with the faces?

This is called

Relational viewing axis.

If you stand slightly higher and to the left:

• She becomes closer to your eye-line.

• He becomes slightly forward in depth.

• To look at him, you must shift gaze.

That creates subtle hierarchy.

You become:
Observer of her.
Witness of him.
